DOJ says former Trump officials can testify.
Hearings began Tuesday morning before the select committee of House members to determine exactly what happened at the U.S. Capitol, who is responsible, and what can be done to prevent such an incident in the future.
There were opening statements from Homeland Security Chairman Bernie Thompson of Mississippi and Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming. Representative Cheney said that “if those responsible are not held accountable” then ”the peaceful transfer of power at the heart of our democratic system” would be undermined in the future.
The panel then heard from four law enforcement officers about their struggles to defend the Capitol from demonstrators. It is unclear how long the hearings will last.
In the meantime, the Justice Department has informed former Trump administration officials that they can provide testimony to the various congressional committees that are investigating the January 6 incident.
Though the panel was supposed to be bipartisan, Speaker Pelosi rejected two of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s committee recommendations, after which he pulled all five of his picks. She appointed more progressive members of the minority leader’s party to the committee instead.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For the committee to discover who is responsible for the events of January 6.
- For a fair hearing to determine the facts behind the trespass into the U.S. Capitol.
- For Congress to ultimately determine how such incidents can be avoided in the future.
